der Moderne<\/strong> has existed since 2002. <br>Originally, a Pinakothek was a museum for paintings. <br>But the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich  <br>also has other works of art.  <br><br>There are <strong>4 museums<\/strong> in the Pinakothek der Moderne: <br>\u2022 Staatliche Grafische Sammlung M\u00fcnchen (National Graphic Arts Collection) <br>\u2022 Collection of modern art in the Pinakothek der Moderne <br>\u2022 Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich <br>\u2022 Die Neue Sammlung &#8211; The Design Museum <br><br>This is why there are also <strong>4 subject areas<\/strong>: <br>\u2022 Art <br>\u2022 Architecture <br>Architecture is about planning buildings. <br>\u2022 Graphics <br>Graphics are for example: drawings, pictures and posters. <br>\u2022 Design  <br>The design determines  <br>how an object looks. <br><br>The Pinakothek der Moderne is  <br>in the district <strong>Max-Vorstadt<\/strong> between: <br>\u2022 Gabelsberger-Stra\u00dfe <br>\u2022 Barer-Stra\u00dfe <br>\u2022 T\u00fcrken-Stra\u00dfe <br>\u2022 Theresien-Stra\u00dfe <br><br>Around 200 years ago, a barracks was built on this site.  <br>It was called <strong>T\u00fcrken-Kaserne<\/strong>. <br>In English, this is called \u201cTurks\u2019 barracks\u201d. <br>It was named after the T\u00fcrken-Stra\u00dfe.  <br>In English, this is called \u201cTurks\u2019 street\u201d. <br>The barracks were for  <br>the 1st and 2nd Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiments. <br>An infantry regiment was a group of soldiers  <br>who fought on foot. <br><br>During the Second World War,  <br>bombs almost completely destroyed the Turks\u2019 barracks. <br>Today, only the <strong>T\u00fcrken-Tor<\/strong> remains. <br>In English, this is called \u201cTurks\u2019 Gate\u201d. <br>This gate was part of the main entrance to  <br>the Turks\u2019 barracks.  <br>It is now listed as a <strong>protected building<\/strong>.  <br><br>After the Second World War,  <br>the place was empty for a long time.  <br>Then the <strong>Roncalli Circus<\/strong> used it for their shows for  <br>almost 20 years. <br><br>In <strong>1990<\/strong>, the government of Bavaria decided  <br>that a <strong>large new museum<\/strong> should be built there.  <br>The museum should show art from the last 150 years. <br>When they started planning, they asked these questions: <br>\u2022 How does a new building fit into the neighbourhood with  <br>the old buildings? <br>\u2022 What should the rooms for the 4 different museums look like? <br><br>167 architects entered a <strong>competition<\/strong> to design the museum. <br>The <strong>architect Stephan Braunfels<\/strong> from Munich  <br>won <strong>first prize<\/strong> for his ideas and plans. The Design Museum  <br>opened a museum in the <strong>city of Weiden<\/strong>:  <br>The <strong>International Ceramics Museum<\/strong>.  <br>The museum belongs to the city of Weiden and  <br>the <strong>State of Bavaria<\/strong>. <br><br>They wanted to show the  <br>many <strong>ceramic objects<\/strong> from the state museums  <br>in other locations in Bavaria.  <br>Die Neue Sammlung &#8211;
